Preliminary Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis of College Magazine

Denotation

A picture of a man on a magazine cover.

Connotation

He’s smart because of what he’s wearing, but possibly cool because he styled out his suit with puma trainers.

Mise en Scene

Setting-It’s white, with a plain background and there’s nothing there, which could suggest it’s in a studio.
Props-There aren’t really any props in the photo.
Costume-His costume is a suit which could tell us that he’s young because it’s a college magazine but also mature. The fact that he teamed up his suit with puma trainers could suggest a child-like and relaxed attitude.
Light-The lighting is very simple, white and natural. There was no other light necessary for this photo.
NVC-The non-verbal communication is very relaxed and calm as his hands are in his pockets which could suggest that he’s relaxed and has finished all his work and so has nothing to do.

Anchorage

The font is in tune with the magazine because it’s neatly messy and very teenager-ish. It’s not formal but informal. The playful side to the font is that the big words look like they’ve been coloured in.
